Each 8th grade English student is required to select and read one book to read on their own each marking period.

Independent Reading Book Selection

Students can choose their book from my extensive classroom library, the NNCS High School library or the NNCS Elementary library.  If a student chooses a book that is not in one of our school libraries, they must bring in a note from their parent/guardian stating that it is o.k. for them to read that book.

Independent Reading Book Length

Some short books are really great!  Your independent reading book can be any length, but you can't get a 100 unless you read 200 pages or more.  You can read more than one book to equal your 200 pages if you like.  Here's how it works:

~100 pages can earn you a 70

~200 pages can earn you a 100

~each 3 pages between 100 and 200 can earn you another point.

So... a 103 page book can earn you a 71

        a 106 page book can earn you a 72

Get it?

Independent Reading Grade
You can choose how to earn a grade for your independent reading assignment.  This will count as 1 major grade for each marking period.

Choice 1- A book interview.  During a book interview I ask you 5-10 questions about your book.  You must have the book with you in class on the day of your scheduled interview.  I will flip through the book, look at the beginnings of some chapters and ask you some questions.  I won't ask very specific questions, just things about important characters and main plot events.
Be careful about choosing books that have been made into movies.  Sometimes you can mess up plot events and character descriptions between the movie and the book.

Choice 2- A book review to the whole class.  For a book review you must write a 5 paragraph essay draft that contains the following information:
a 1 paragraph summary of the plot
a 1 paragraph description of the main character(s)
a 1 paragraph comparison to a popular movie
a 1 paragraph explanation of how you like the book and why
a 1 paragraph evaluation of the book as a whole
After I have seen the draft and approved it as acceptable, you must schedule a time during silent reading days to read your essay and answer questions about the book.

Choice 3- A brand new way to share a book with the class.  You only have to prove to me that you read the book and understood most of it.  If you want to share the book with your classmates in an interesting way, talk to me and we can figure out a plan together.  Think...posters, songs, skits, read aloud an exciting part of the book, letter to the author.........

Here are some great books i've read recently:
Disappearing Acts by Sid Fleischman
Lucky Stars by Lucy Frank
Star Girl & Love, Star girl by Jerry Spinelli
An Unexpected Life by Queen Noor
Guts by Gary Paulsen
